Submissions

The editor invites submissions from individuals passionate about various facets of nautical and other history whether they are established professionals, independent researchers, interns, or students. For submissions, questions, comments, or suggestions, interested parties are encouraged to read the following information.

The Bowsprit will be published quarterly, with each issue delivered directly to Drake Navigators Guild members via email. Furthermore, to promote accessibility and wider dissemination of knowledge, each subsequent issue will be archived on the society's website, allowing the general public to access past editions.

The content of the journal reflects the mission of the DNG and will additionally include articles relating to seafaring and shipbuilding during the Age of Sail and other matters relating to seafaring among all peoples and nations. Subject matters may include but are not limited to:

  • Matters relating to 16th-century nautical history

  • Pacific Coast nautical history, archaeology, and anthropology

  • Sailing, navigating, maritime customs, and other items of similar interest

  • Maritime historic landmarks

  • The disciplines of history, archaeology, and anthropology

  • Information about maritime museums, societies, and programs

  • Indigenous peoples' history as it relates to the sea

  • The people, activities, and initiatives of the Drake Navigators Guild itself

In addition to scholarly contributions, The Bowsprit welcomes announcements from museums and history societies worldwide, fostering a collaborative platform for sharing knowledge and discoveries. Articles should be within 400 to 2500 words including footnotes and references. An author’s biography of nor more than 50 words of relevant work, publications, or interests should be included, and any images must be properly attributed.

The Bowsprit is not a refereed journal. End notes are not required; References or Further Reading should be included. Original research or articles entirely based on secondary sources are welcome. Contributing authors will not be compensated. They will retain all rights.
